EXPERT KNOWLEDGE ABRASIVE CLOTHS
Compared to conventional Abrasive paper sandpaper, Abrasive cloths have some decisive advantages that make them the preferred choice for some uses.
Difference to Abrasive paper sandpaper
The biggest difference between Abrasive cloths and sandpaper lies in thebackingmaterial. While Abrasive paper sandpaper has a paper backing, the backing material of Abrasive cloths consists of a flexiblefabric, usually made of cotton or polyester. This abrasive cloth makes the Material particularly resistant to tears and increases its durability. It can also be placed around edges and curves more easily without breaking or wearing out quickly.
Another difference is itswaterresistance. Many Abrasive cloths products are Waterproof and can be used for wet sanding applications, whereas conventional Abrasive paper sandpaper softens quickly due to moisture and loses its abrasive particles.
Material and abrasive particles used
The quality of an abrasive depends largely on theabrasiveparticles used. The abrasive cloths made by Klingspor are made of high-quality corundum abrasive particles. Corundum (aluminium oxide) is a particularly hard and durable Material that ensures even stock removal and a long service life.
The backing material of these abrasive cloths consists of a robust cotton fabric that reliably holds the abrasive particles and ensures a high degree of flexibility. This combination of sturdy backing material and high-performance abrasive grain makes the abrasive cloths ideal for a wide range of uses, from metalworking to woodworking.
The back of the abrasive cloth can be smooth (hand sanding) or with Velcro, e.g. for use on machines.
We offer high-quality Klingspor abrasive cloths in 115 mm width, both cut to size (280 mm) and in rolls.
Grit and its meaning
The Grit refers to the number of abrasive particles per square inch on the backing material.
-
Fine grit (150-400): These grits are used for fine sanding or polishing surfaces.
-
Medium grit (80-150): Suitable for intermediate sanding or removing old paint and rust.
-
Coarse grit (40-80): Grits for coarse sanding or quick material removal.
Grit 100 is ideal for smoothing surfaces or removing slight unevenness without leaving too coarse sanding marks.
Applications and advantages of Abrasive cloths
Due to its high flexibility, Abrasive cloths are particularly popularformanual sanding work or for sanding with narrow sanding belts on machines. It is ideal for:
-
Metalworking: removing rust, smoothing weld seams, preparing for painting.
-
Woodworking: Fine sanding of workpieces, adjusting curves and edges. Sanding on the lathes.
-
Plastics processing: deburring and smoothing of surfaces.
-
Automotive sector: Sanding work on car bodies, especially for paint preparation.
Thanks to the stableabrasivecloth, the material can usually be used both dry and wet (e.g. micro-mesh), which reduces the amount of dust during sanding and increases efficiency.
The adaptability of Abrasive cloths is a major plus point. For example, it can be placed around grinding aids that are adapted to the workpiece, such as profiles, counter profiles or round bars.
Abrasive cloths are extremely versatile and durable abrasives that are characterised by their robust backing material, high flexibility and excellent sanding properties. Compared to Abrasive paper sandpaper, it offers better adaptability and greater resistance, especially when working on irregular surfaces.
