EXPERT KNOWLEDGE WET SANDING PAPER
Can any Abrasive paper sandpaper also be used for wet sanding?
Wet sanding paper is an abrasive developed for a specific Intended use.
The base of the sandpaper on which the abrasive grains are bonded determines whether a sandpaper is Waterproof or not.
Conventional sandpaper / sandpaper for wood, e.g. from Klingspor, has a much stronger base than the wet sandpaper from the same Manufacturer. Klingspor specifies this in categories from A to G. The papers from A to G become increasingly heavier. "A paper" is therefore a thin base that is used for Waterproof Abrasive paper sandpaper, while "F paper" is used for conventional sandpaper. In addition, F-paper is not Waterproof and would disintegrate during use.
Klingspor abrasive cloths, for example, also have a cloth that is not suitable for use with water, while Micro Mesh offers an abrasive cloth that can be used for wet sanding.
Conversely, many wet sanding papers can also be used for dry sanding.
Before buying, it is important to check the suitability for use via the description text or the listed properties.
When do you need Wet sanding paper?
Intermediate sanding of hard surface coating materials such as lacquers
(furniture lacquers, vehicle lacquers, violin making lacquers...)
Very fine grits from 400 to 8000 are usually used here. The sanding dust is bound by the water. Even complex contours are easy to sand thanks to the thin paper. Wet sanding is also suitable for difficult colours such as silver when painting cars.
Sharpening cutting tools
Sharpening cutting tools has nothing to do with surface treatment. Nevertheless, wet sanding paper is also used in this area. Special abrasive films from 3M, applied to a flat backing, produce a grinding pattern that is just as precise as conventional waterstones when used in a sensible sequence of grits.
Dressing Sharpening stones
Sharpening stones must be dressed regularly in order to form precise cutting edges. Appropriate diamond dressing blocks are available for dressing. However, these are usually quite expensive. A cost-effective option is to dress the stones with water abrasive paper with a coarse grit of 100 - 220 on a flat base. The water is used to remove the abrasive sponges and bind the sanding dust.
Use of wet sanding paper
There is no general recommendation for the use of Wet sanding paper.
Klingspor Abrasive paper sandpaper for intermediate lacquer sanding should be briefly placed in water before use. After use, the sanding dust should be washed off if possible so that the paper remains usable for longer.
Soaking also applies to Wet sanding paper, which is used for dressing Sharpening stones. In this case, the advantage of watered sandpaper is also its adhesion to smooth surfaces such as glass or stone slabs; this abrasive paper sandpaper must be rinsed off much more frequently due to the heavy formation of abrasive sludge on the water stones.
When sharpening tool cutting edges on Abrasive paper sandpaper, a quick spray with a water spray bottle is sufficient.
