As new online safety laws and advances in AI reshape digital markets, a new class of third-party software vendors has emerged offering platforms for managing trust and safety. This article examines how these vendors reshape platform governance not merely as secondary labor providers but as positioned actors in a social and professional field.

In the 21st century, the far right has gained strength both inside and outside political institutions across a number of countries. Far-right parties have achieved considerable electoral success; far-right protests and movements have spread internationally; and nativist ideas have become increasingly normalized. The workshop, "The Far Right between Institutions and Civil Society," brings together early career researchers to present and discuss research on the challenges and consequences of the far right inside and outside political institutions.

We study whether homophily plays a role in grant evaluation processes. Relying on more than 37,000 grant applications from the European Research Council, we find causal evidence for small effects of homophily related to gender, but quantitatively more significant homophily related to citizenship and country of work, with the largest estimates if both citizenship and country align between applicant and reviewer.

On Sunday, September 14, 2025, celebrations will once again take place at the Kulturforum Berlin. For the fourth time, the cultural and scientific institutions as well as St. Matthäus Church will be organizing a public festival for young and old, this time under the motto “Paradise.” The WZB will open its doors to the public as well, inviting visitors to an architectural tour and a discussion event with sociologist Eva Illouz.
On September 11–12, 2025, an international workshop on “Women and Work in the 21st Century” will take place at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center. Organized by Nicola Fuchs-Schündeln, Felix Holub, Jonas Jessen, and Anne Sophie Lassen, the workshop brings together senior and junior economists to discuss current research on gender disparities in knowledge-intensive occupations. Over two days, presentations will explore various dimensions of labor market outcomes, career development, and workplace experiences, drawing on a range of disciplinary perspectives and research approaches.
The workshop is part of the Stimulating Prosocial Behavior (PROSOCIAL) project.
The PROSOCIAL project is a large collaborative project funded by Leibniz 2025-2028. Institutional partners involved are, among others, RWI Essen, University Hamburg, PIK and many expert individual researchers like Mark Andor (RWI), Andreas Lange (U Hamburg), Lorenz Goette (NUS), René Bekkers (VU Amsterdam), Steffen Huck (WZB), Isabel Thielmann (MPI), and Linus Mattauch (PIK & TU Berlin).
The provision of equal access to justice is a question of equity and justice and has therefore been named a core element of the rule of law in a democratic society. It is the most basic human right and the procedural equivalent of Hannah Arendt’s ‘right to have rights’.
The WZB is hosting an international workshop on “Expectations of Climate Change – Households, Firms, and the Labor Market,” to be held over two days on July 17–18, 2025, at the WZB Berlin, Germany. Das Institut für Bildungsrecht und Bildungsforschung e.V., An-Institut der Ruhr-Universität Bochum (IfBB) hat gemeinsam mit dem Deutschen Institut für Internationale Pädagogische Forschung (DIPF) 2012 den Deutschen Schulrechtstag (DSRT) begründet. Seit seiner 6. Auflage richtet das IfBB den DSRT gemeinsam mit dem Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung (WZB) und seit 2023 zudem mit der Bucerius Law School Hamburg aus.

Emerging literature studying temporary and permanent migration decisions expands the existing evidence on gendered migration desires, intentions, aspirations, and plans. Yet there remains a gap in understanding gendered aspirations from the perspective of the origin countries, especially regarding how socially defined factors interact with gender to affect migration aspirations.
