A small private plane carrying three pilots has crashed at Moscow's Vnukovo airport, an airport spokewoman said, denying initial reports that it was a passenger jet operated by German airline Germanwings.

The "Challenger" aircraft owned by a Swiss company was taking off from Moscow and was bound for Berlin, the spokeswoman said.

Russia's Emergency Ministry said the plane came down in a snowstorm and exploded on a field at the airport. All three pilots survived the crash but were injured. There were no passengers were on board.

There was initial confusion about the identity of the plane because authorities wrongly cited the flight number of a Germanwings flight to Berlin.
